Suited for projects that require accurate distance measurements, this IR sensor will also add obstacle avoidance and motion sensing to the list of mods you're creating for your robot. An alternative to sonar rangefinders, this GPY0A21YKOF Sharp sensor will provide accurate distance measurements at a more affordable price. This particular Sharp sensor will detect distances in a range of 4″ to 32″ (10-80 cm).
The GPY0A21YKOF uses a 3-pin JST PH connector that works with our 3-pin JST PH cables for Sharp distance sensors, also included is a 3-pin JST PH cable 7.87 in (20 cm) in length for each unit. How it works: Infrared is sent out by the sensor which bounces off objects. The analog voltage that is returned determines how close the nearest object is. The closer it is, the higher voltage is returned.
The Sharp GP2Y0A21YK0F distance sensors available at Tomson Electronics are a popular choice for many projects that require accurate distance measurements. GP2Y0A21YK0F IR sensor is more economical than sonar rangefinders, yet it provides much better performance than other IR alternatives. Interfacing to most microcontrollers is straightforward: the single analog output can be connected to an analog-to-digital converter for taking distance measurements, or the output can be connected to a comparator for threshold detection. The detection range of this version is approximately 10 cm to 80 cm (4″ to 32″).
